Central Services at/on Radio 8 Ball live show

I never know what to call the "live performance" version of Radio 8 Ball. It's still Radio 8 Ball. But, it's in front of a live audience instead of on the radio. In any case, Central Services is appearing this Thursday, July 19, and it's happening at the Capitol Hill Arts Center.

Jon Auer in live version of Radio 8 Ball (& mp3)

Tonight is another live performance version of Radio 8 Ball (the "sanctioned" one with Andras Jones), featuring Jon Auer. It's happening at the Capitol Hill Arts Center tonight at 7:30pm (doors at 7pm). It's $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Here's an mp3 from Jon's song "Six Feet Underground" to listen to while you surf over to buy tickets.

Radio 8 Ball gets ripped off?

Hat tip to Three Imaginary Girls for this one

I've written about Radio 8 Ball a number of times here on the blog. If you're not familiar with the concept, you can see their myspace page. But, if you are familiar with the radio program, then you probably also know that there is a "live show" version called The Ego and the Oracle.

Well, now it turns appears that Andras, who started the Radio 8 Ball show, has been fired from involvement with the live show and they're moving forward without him. Here's some text from a myspace page titled "The Ego Stole The Oracle:"

How The Ego stole The Oracle. On Valentine's Day 2006 a Boston band called Jim's Big Ego appeared on Radio8Ball, a call-in divination show created and hosted by Andras Jones. Radio8Ball has been on the air since 1998. Jim's Big Ego are an indie rock band with a reputation for conscience and integrity. Jim's Big Ego liked the Radio8Ball experience so much that they asked Andras Jones to collaborate with them on a stage production based on his show. Together they created a stage show called The Ego & The Oracle. This show was performed in Somerville, Massachusetts in late September of 2006 and was followed by a successful Seattle production in early April of 2007. When it came time to mount the second Boston production creative differences arose between Andras and the band's manager (who had taken on the role of the Boston producer.) The result of these creative differences was that Andras was fired from the production and his name and involvement in the creation of the show were removed from the all promotional materials for the show. Jim's Big Ego moved forward as if the idea for the show was entirely theirs and refused to compensate, credit or even communicate with the person whose format they were brazenly claiming as their own. Although The Ego & The Oracle continues to run it does so without Andras Jones's consent. People who wish to experience Radio8Ball can tune into the show Tuesdays from 6 to 8pm (Pacific Standard Time) at www.kaosradio.org.

Now Matt Southworth is on Radio 8 Ball

It was supposed to be last week. But, apparantly the freakish ice and snow storm kept it from going down. So, tonight on KAOS out of Olympia, Matt Southworth of The Capillaries will be appearing on Radio 8 Ball from 6pm until 8pm.

You can listen live on the web, as well.

Radio 8 Ball

So, I just saw a myspace bulletin from Central Services that reminded me that I was going to blog about Radio 8 Ball. I give props to Andras (who is also part of the My Brave Face project that focuses on music from Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello) and Tammy for this idea. If you guys created this, then, bravo! It's very cool idea and a fun listen.

Radio 8 Ball is broadcast on KAOS radio out of Olympia, and it's streamable online.

Here's the gist of things:

You call in and ask a question. Then they play a song at random (literally CD & track number chosen at random via CD shuffle) and use the content of that song to divine an answer to your question. If you go to their myspace page, there is a description/interview from NPR's All Things Considered that gives a great overview.

Central Services is performing live on the program tonight from 7pm until 8pm. From their myspage page, this is how they work it with live bands -- "When we have a live guest we answer the questions by picking songs at random off a numbered sheet of 8 songs that the songwriter provides and performs live as the answer to the question."

There is also an online version of Radio 8 Ball.
